Managing a Taxonomy
Curators can add, rename, and remove categories and make other changes to a taxonomy.
A taxonomy is a hierarchical collection of categories or "nodes". As a best practice, Tamr recommends following the MECE principle (mutually exclusive, collectively exhaustive) when designing and revising a taxonomy. See Taxonomy Design Principles.
Deleting a Taxonomy
To delete a taxonomy:
- Open the Categories page.
- To the right of the taxonomy name, select More > Delete taxonomy > Confirm.
Adding a Category
Tip: To add several related categories in different tiers (a branch), add the top-most (or parent) category first, then the categories in the next tier, and so on.
To add a category to a taxonomy:
- Open the Categories page.
- To add a top-level category, select Add next to Tier 1 and the category count. A text box appears at the end of the list of tier 1 categories.
- Enter the new category name and then select Save.
- To add a tier 2 category, select the tier 1 category to which you want to add it and then select Add next to Tier 2 and the category count. A text box appears at the end of the list of tier 2 categories.
- Enter the new category name and then select Save.
- To add a Tier 3 category, select the Tier 1 category and then the Tier 2 category to which you want to add it, and then select Add above the tier 3 category names. A text box appears at the end of the list of tier 3 categories.
- Enter the new category name and then select Save.
You can also add categories when you are suggesting categories for records. After you select New categorization the Choose a category for this record dialog box offers the same Add option.
Renaming a Category
When you change the name of a category, all records with that category suggested by a reviewer or other expert are immediately updated with the new name. The category names in system suggestions update the next time you apply feedback and update results.
Tip: Categories that are in the same tier must have unique names.
To rename a category:
- Open the Categories page.
- Move your cursor over the category name that you want to change. Select Edit .
- Change the name in the text box that appears.
- Select Save.
You can also edit category names when you are suggesting categories for records. After you select New categorization the Choose a category for this record dialog box offers the same Edit option as the Categories page.
Removing a Category
You can remove a category if it has not yet been assigned to any records by a reviewer or other expert. To remove suggestions for a category from all records that your experts have reviewed and verified, see Clearing all categorizations for a single category.
Important: Removing a category also removes all of the category's children.
To remove one or more categories from a taxonomy:
- Open the Categories page.
- Select a category and verify that you want to remove it and all of its branch and leaf nodes.
- Select Delete above the list of categories in the tier you selected.
Tip: If you select a category in the lowest-level tier, you must scroll to the side to bring the icon into view. - Select Remove.
You can also remove categories when you are suggesting categories for records. After you select New categorization the Choose a category for this record dialog box offers the same Delete option as the Categories page.
